Tips and Tricks to Avoid Greasy Hair

Hiya everyone and welcome to my blog!

I did a poll on Twitter a few days ago to ask what you guys would like to see and tips on reducing greasy hair was by far the winner! So today I’m going to share some ideas on how to deal with greasy hair and try to avoid it in the future. For a long time I have struggled with greasy hair. I have found that if I wash my hair on a morning, sometimes by night time and definitely by the next morning my hair will look really greasy again. Over the past few years I have learnt a few tricks to manage and deal with having greasy hair, so let’s get into the tips!

1. Apply shampoo before water

I received this tip from my hairdresser after I told her about my greasy hair problems. She said that sometimes the water and oil can separate so the shampoo can’t do it’s job as well as it should. So before getting you get your hair wet try to apply your shampoo and rub it into your dry hair, leaving it for a while. This just means that your hair can have deeper wash.

2. Dry shampoo is your best friend

I could not leave the house some days if I didn’t own dry shampoo! It has saved my hair more times than I can remember, whether I’ve woken up late and I don’t have time to properly wash my hair or simply just can’t be bothered, I always turn to my dry shampoo! My favourite is Batiste ‘floral and flirty’. You simply spray your hair, rub it in and go! Talc also does the same job but leaves your hair looking really white if you use too much or don’t brush it out properly, so use carefully!

3. Less is more with products

If you use a lot of different products on your hair, it can get bunged up with product and block your pores. It can also strip back too many of your hairs natural oils, which can actually make it even greasier. So stick to the minimum products needed and try products made for people with greasy hair.

4. Only use conditioner on the ends

This is similar to the previous point. But I have found that only putting conditioner on the ends of my hair, doesn’t clog up my pores or weigh down my hair as much which means that it won’t get as greasy!

5. Try to reduce how often you wash your hair

I definitely need to take my own advice on this one as it is definitely easier said then done! When you wash your hair too often, it strips away the natural oils, resulting in it becoming more greasy. I definitely don’t do this but if you are able to, its much better for your hair!

6. Try not to touch your hair too much or over brush

Touching and brushing your hair, can open the pores, causing them to produce more oil which in turn makes your hair greasier! This is hard to do so tying your hair up, helps keep it less greasy.

7. Diet and water are important too

Whilst I don’t do this haha, it can be said that having a good diet and drinking lots of water helps reduce oil and could perhaps prevent your hair from getting as greasy as fast.

8. Hide it

I use this tip pretty much all of the time! I use hairbands and different styles that I know will cover it up. I wear my bandana a lot because it distracts from my greasy hair. Also having my hair tied up makes it look nicer and hides it better!

9. Avoid straightening?

I saw this on Pinterest the other day so I don’t know how true it is! But apparently if you straighten your hair, it lies flat on your scalp, causing i to produce more oil and become more greasy. I might have to try as I do straighten my hair a lot!

I hope you enjoyed these tips and that they might help you in some way!

I struggle with this too! I’ve just started using a clay shampoo and conditioner and I think it’s helping reduce some of the greasiness x
